Blog Tour Guest Post ~ Mireille Chester

If you could spend a day in Quelondain, what would you do there?

Hi everyone! I want to start off by saying thanks for having me here today.

For those of you who haven't read Crossover and The Chosen One Trilogy, I'd like to give you a bit of a tour into the world of Quelondain and what I'd do if I could spend one day there. If you're lucky enough to be one of the humans with a bit of magic inside of you, you can get there by finding one of the cross trails. They're all over this world, you just have to find them.

The first thing I'd do once I crossed over was head to Sageden for their Wellfore celebration. I'd spend the morning walking through the street fair, eating pies, and drinking sloan. It would be amazing to stroll through the courtyard and watch as the Wedelven children ran around. I might even catch a glimpse of some Namael cubs while they play games either in their human form or their cat form.

Then, in the afternoon, I'd find a herd of Winged Ones and talk one of them into taking me for a ride. I mean, who doesn't want to take a ride on a flying horse! If the Winged Ones weren't around, I might scrounge up the courage to as one of the Scannoves if I could ride one of them. I have no idea what riding a scaly centaur would be like, but I'm sure it would be awesome!

In the evening, I'd make my way to the field that has the sacred white tree and I'd watch as the teal colored, flying Burries used the magic dust from their wings to light up the entire area so that everyone could eat, drink, and dance. I'd get a few dances in with the locals and sit at one of the bonfires so I could listen to some stories.

I know a day would never be enough and I'd leave that night knowing I'd be going back. Once you've been in Quelondain, you miss the magic and the amazing beings.

Well, I hope you all had a good time on our mini holiday in Quelondain! Thanks again for joining me today!
Stay safe!
Mi

Prologue:

It’s hard to believe that at one point life had seemed dull, boring, average and uneventful. That was the way I liked it. My life was routine--one day at a time with no extra fuss. Everything I did was so uneventful that, for the most part, I didn’t even dream, or at least I didn’t have any dreams that I could remember. My days followed a simple rhythm. I got up every Monday morning, took a shower, ate breakfast, and headed to school. There, I sat and suffered for eight hours.

I was in my first year of classes for veterinary medicine. Now, don’t get me wrong, I loved my coursework. The reason I felt like I was suffering was because those eight hours stood between me and Dodge.

Dodge was my thirteenth birthday present. He’d been a goofy looking weanling with long legs and soft eyes. He’d stood looking up at me from his stall with a big green bow tied around his neck. He was perfect. You see, I’d been riding since I was eight and begging for a horse since I could talk. Before he’d given me my horse, my dad had told me I had to prove to him that I was going to stick with it. That hadn’t been hard to do. I can’t begin to count the arguments we’ve had about the fact that I spend most of my free time with Dodge. Dodge is now ten and I’m twenty-three. He has grown into a beautiful, muscular horse and I’m, well, I’m happy with life as it is. Just me and Dodge.

It’s not that I’m not interested in men. I’ve had one fairly serious relationship that lasted a year and a half. At least I thought it was serious. When I think back on it now, it’s hard to believe I’d thought he was the most amazing guy. Well, he was, until I loaned him my truck for a weekend and found a very nice pair of lacy underwear that didn’t belong to me under the seat the next day. They say Canadians are sweet, polite, and will forgive anything and everything. Yeah. Apparently, I didn’t get the memo. I’ve had a few other boyfriends, but most of them didn’t understand why I’d rather go to the barn on a Friday night instead of going to the bar. The thought of going out and being paraded around just isn’t my thing, and I’ll admit that some of it probably has to do with my personal image of myself. I don’t put myself in the “beautiful people” category.

My slightly wavy dark brown hair that falls to the middle of my back is never done. I prefer ponytails and baseball hats. I also don’t have the greatest body. At five-foot-four, I’m kind of thin and seriously lacking curves. Of course, I don’t really dress to flatter, either. My wardrobe consists of Wranglers, t- shirts, and tank tops, though I do own one dress. My dad made me buy it for my cousin’s wedding when I was seventeen. It’s been worn as little as possible since then. I think my best feature is my eyes. They’re a deep green with gold and grey specs and long eyelashes. No mascara for me. Well, no makeup, period. I always end up smearing it because I forget I’m wearing it.

You’re probably getting tired of hearing about me, but I need you to understand one thing before I get on with this story. I’ve always been a loner, that person who is never comfortable around people. Now, don’t get me wrong, I like most people, but I’ve always felt like I didn’t belong. You know, like there was something very important missing.

Then one day everything changed. It was a Friday…

What is the best thing about being a self published author?

I love the flexibility of it. I’m a bit of a control freak so I like to be able to make choices for myself and in my own time.

With covers I love the fact that the cover choice is mine in the end. I don’t have someone making my main character’s hair blonde when it’s supposed to be black or giving me a bare-chested male when I don’t want a guy on the cover. I love coming up with mockups and talking to my amazing cover artist Kate Strawbridge from Dwell Design and Press, about whether it will work, comparing mockups and making the final decision. Some covers I do myself and I’m still amazed that they looks so good :)

With formatting for both ebook and print I enjoy the hands on aspect of it, the ability to change proof errors whenever I want without having to wait for someone else to do it, or without having to pay for each change. I understand why formatters charge for changes but I prefer to do the formatting on my own more especially because I actually do enjoy fiddling with the file until it’s ready.
I love being in charge of choosing my own editor and proofreader, of maintaining good friendships with everyone who has contributed to my little book being ready for the world.

And lastly, I enjoy being able to set my own deadlines for releases and delaying them or bringing them forward if I so choose. I also like being able to write a book and have it release within a few months of having been written. I love the knowledge that I can choose to write 3 books for the year or I can up the ante and write 10 just because I want to.

And of course I love interacting on a personal level with bloggers and readers. Bloggers have been amazing to me ever since I began my writing career and I can never thank them enough for their part in helping indies like me get exposure to readers.

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognize that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practice given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes... I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It's a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each others loves - it works wonderfully...

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands - I shall forever remain cross-eyed.
