Everybody Wants Somebody To Love

I was listening to the radio the other day when a new song came on that grabbed my attention. It had a catchy tune and I think it was sung by a group that I like, but what really struck me was the hook in the chorus. I wish I could remember the exact words (only heard the song once so far), but they were something to the effect of “we all want to be loved, but we also want someone to love”.

I’ve always thought that there’s a big difference in wanting to be loved and wanting somebody to love. Being loved is a great feeling! Everyone wants to feel as though they are special to someone and as though they rank first in someone’s affections. Getting those literal or proverbial flowers and roses feels so good. There’s nothing like being the center of attention, the problem is that being the center of someone’s attention isn’t always a sign of love.

Love is a verb. It is giving of yourself to others and loving them. It’s nice to be the focal point of someone else’s love, but to me an even greater love is when you find that special somebody who lets you love them. Love is sharing and building something with someone. That’s something you can only do when you have somebody to love as well as to be loved by.

When I write my romance novels, I try to write about people discovering somebody to love. It’s not just about the handsome alpha hero sweeping in and finally falling in love with a deserving heroine who has been overlooked for one reason or another. Those stories can be fine, but I’ve always loved stories of people discovering someone who they suddenly realize they could really, really love.

I think that’s why I love the idea of a hero and heroine getting together earlier in the book, then facing some obstacle together, then having their eyes opened to realize that, wait a minute! This person I got together with for one reason is actually someone I can fall in love with for an entirely different reason! I definitely did that with the first book in my Montana Romance series, Our Little Secrets. Michael and Charlotte (“Charlie”) start out with a marriage of convenience, but as they face a startling danger together, they each realize that the other, lo and behold, is somebody they can really love.

Now here I am at the last book in the series, with a hero who truly believes he will never find anyone for him. So it’s no surprise that the book is called Somebody to Love. It’s my tribute to all of those people—kind of like myself, actually—who believe they will never find somebody to love.

It seems like such an impossibility sometimes, doesn’t it? To find somebody to love. The idea is so simple. It’s so necessary to who we are as human beings, as that song I heard on the radio echoes. And yet, too much of our lives are spend looking without finding. We have plenty of people who love us, but until we find that one person what we can really LOVE, it’s just not quite the same, is it.

But take heart! I also believe that there really is somebody out there for each of us to love! Sometimes it just takes a little more time than others. That’s exactly why I love to write love stories. They give me, and I hope my readers too, hope of the promise of what it is to be human that we all want to love somebody and someday will be given that chance. It’s written in the stars, so it should be written in the pages. Everybody needs somebody to love, and I believe someday everybody will find that somebody.
